Learning objectives

After completing this activity, participants should be able to:
  • Provide an overview of the etiology of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection, list potential risk factors in hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) and solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients, and identify patients at high risk of developing post-transplant infections.
  • Outline the unmet needs of transplant recipients susceptible to CMV.
  • Describe clinical features of CMV disease in transplant recipients and apply guideline recommendations for evidence-based screening and diagnosis assessment of CMV infection.
  • Identify mechanisms leading to drug resistance in CMV infection and its implications.
  • Describe therapeutic strategies for managing CMV infection (particularly refractory disease) in transplant recipients and differentiate therapies based on efficacy and safety data, mechanism of action, and route of administration.
  • Employ interprofessional strategies for monitoring treatment response and managing refractory CMV infection.
